ON33: Matt Tellez, UNC-Asheville Men’s Soccer

The operations position has grown by leaps and bounds during the last decade. The vast majority of operations functions, however, still falls upon the hardworking coaches and other staffers that make up most athletic teams at the college and high school level. A great example of this setup is at the University of North Carolina-Asheville where many of the traditional operations duties for the men’s soccer team are performed by assistant coach Matt Tellez.

In this episode, Matt discusses his playing days at Sacramento State University, trying to decide which career path to pursue, getting his coaching start at Sacramento State, the move to Asheville, head coach Matthes Mennell, how coaching and operations duties are divided up at UNCA, How he balances his coaching and operations duties, leaning on mentors for advice, and learning from mistakes.

Matt’s operations duties include:

  • travel
  • itenerary
  • scheduling
  • and more
