Maine-Presque Isle joins North Atlantic Conference | WAGM TV

Take a close look at the map and you will see a school that is not only farther north than Detroit, Cleveland, New York, and Boston, but is further north than Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. It’s easy to see why conference affiliation would be very important. You can only imagine what scheduling travel would be like at UMPI.

PRESQUE ISLE, Me (WAGM)_ The University of Maine Presque Isle has become a full member of the North Atlantic Conference. Owls Athletic Director Dan Kane is excited to become a member of the NAC.

(Dan Kane):”I couldn’t be more excited for our Athletes Coaches and University as a whole. It gives us more conference games and sometimes due to our location it can hard to get those up here. Also it will limit our time on the road and will also give us a chance if we win to get a berth to an NCAA Tournament.”

The Owls were in the Sunrise Conference until 2011 when the conference was disbanded. This will mark the first time since then that the Owls will play a full conference schedule.

Kane:”It is renewing old rivalries from the Maine Athletic Conference with Husson and UMF and Thomas and also with the Sunrise Conference when we were with SUNY Canton and Lyndon State. It is kind of like old friends getting together again. It should be a really good league and be good for us.”

The Owls will compete in the NAC in volleyball, golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, track and field baseball and softball. Nordic skiing will continue to compete at the Division 1 NCAA level.
Kane says the Owls and SUNY Canton will begin competing in the conference next fall.
