Craig Smith’s first full-time coaching job is a challenging one. The director of operations, or “ops” as it’s often referred to in football circles, is usually the first step taken in coaching circles on the road to bigger and better jobs. It’s a jack-of-all-trades position where you learn the ropes and do much of the dirty, detail work such as arranging travel, etc.
Typically, the ops job is one in which the culture of the program is already established and the ops person must mold himself to fit an already defined role. With Mallory being a new coach, and a first-time one at that, Craig Smith is in a unique position not having any pre-described definition to fit into. He can grow along with the rest of the staff and Mallory said Craig Smith is his “right hand man”.
